Arranger and Vocals

Jonathan began honing his skills as pianist and vocal harmonist at an early age. His first few piano lessons were given by his Dad who had to perch Jonathan on his lap so that he could reach the keys. During hymn-singing in school assemblies he would try to sing the bass part an octave higher – and even then struggle to reach the notes!

He first remembers being moved by music when he came across some old Carpenters tapes. The nostalgic arrangements and harmonies coupled with Karen’s wistful voice left an indelible impression on the 8 year old. Jonathan would spend most “piano practice” time trying to decipher these sounds – much to the chagrin of parents and music teachers!

There were very few musical influences in his life until he was given a Hi-Fi when he turned 13. Learning to play pop tunes on the piano which he heard on his radio meant that he was now able to make music with singers and, in time, other band musicians at school. One such friend was Ben Devon, whose zest for music-making was infectious. Many times they would seek the solace of a practice room with upright piano during a free period (and sometimes during Art!) and there recreate favourite tunes.

It was at this time that Johnny first encountered the Beach Boys. He was sitting in the back seat of a friend’s car when Surfer Girl started playing. He doesn’t remember where he was or where he was going, but was stunned by the sunny harmonies and weeping falsetto of Brian Wilson.

It was a pleasure when, a couple of years later, he met fellow Beach Boys enthusiasts Pierre and Jean-Michel at a luncheon club for elderly folk. With their common interest in Beach Boys established, conversation quickly gave way to harmonising. He dimly recalls that they were supposed to be providing some suitable music for senior citizens, but instead they received a few cycles of Please Let Me Wonder and the coda to Close To You!

In 1999, Jonathan became a Christian. Since this moment he has been growing in understanding that the reason for music is to give glory to the One who inspires. He is indebted to God and now seeks to use his gifts for His pleasure.

Richie Hart, five years below Johnny at Secondary School, re-entered his orbit when they met on a music tour in Rome. He was struck by Richie’s eagerness to sing close harmony and ability to hold his own on a part, though only a youngster. The new friendship led to Richard joining an a cappella group that Johnny directed at Music College. Amongst its members were JP and JM.

The remnant of this group was eventually joined by Ben Devon, whose demoralising experiences with the accountancy world had not taken the edge of his appetite to be in a successful band. Ben’s vision and drive along with the fastidious attention to musical detail and outstanding ability of the band saw the emergence of Beach Boys Smile.

Johnny sees the key to the band’s continuing success resting in the common pursuit of musical excellence and friendship. Having worked with many other musicians, he is aware that musical ventures eventually fade out if the “vibes” are not there. But as long as the sun smiles upon BBS, the good vibrations remain!

When not playing with BBS, Jonathan teaches piano and composition in a number of schools, arranges music, is a regularly called on accompanist and directs a Christian a cappella group.
